Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who met US Vice President JD Vance in Germany on Friday, said Ukraine was not invited to talks in Saudi Arabia and that Kiev would not hold talks with Russia before consulting strategic partners.
US Representative Michael McCaul told Reuters that US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, National Security Adviser Mike Waltz and White House Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff would travel to Saudi Arabia. It was not immediately clear whom they would meet from Russia.
McCaul said during the Munich Security Conference that the aim of the talks was to arrange a meeting between US President Donald Trump, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Zelensky “so that peace can finally be established and this conflict ends.”
A source with knowledge of the plans confirmed the planned talks between US and Russian officials in Saudi Arabia. The US State Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
