The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) has released telecom sectors subscription data for September 2020, under which Bharti Airtel added more than twice the new customers added by peer Reliance Jio (RJio). Apart from these two largest telcos, BSNL also saw growth in new wireless subscribers. However, Vodafone Idea (VIL) subscribes base continues to drop, followed by MTNL and Reliance Communication (RCom).
TRAI’s data showed that Airtel added 3.8M new wireless subscribers in September 2020, while RJio added nearly 1.5M new customers. BSNL added 78,454 new subscribers.
However, VIL lost a whopping 4.7M subscribers, followed by MTNL and RCom who lost 5,784 and 1,324 customers respectively.
Following the subscription data announcement, Airtel was trading at Rs494 per piece up 2.93% on Sensex at around 3.24 pm. However, VIL was performing at Rs9.77 per piece down 2% on Friday.
In terms of market share, RJio continues to hold the leadership with 35.19%, followed by Airtel with 28.44%, VIL with 25.73% and BSNL with 10.36%.
In September 2020, total wireless subscribers stood at 1,148.58M compared to 1,147.92M in August 2020.
Meanwhile, the number of telephone subscribers rose to 1,168.66M in the latest month as against 1,167.81M in August 2020.
